Methylene Blue is a precursor molecule to hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine. It was actually the first synthetic drug in modern history developed in 1876. Best known as a textile dye, since has been found to have several medicinal benefits. About 125 years ago, a German physician began using methylene blue as a medical treatment for malaria. Since then, its uses have evolved. Currently, it’s FDA-approved only for treating methemoglobinemia, but doctors have use it off-label for other conditions, due to its ability to protect against oxidative stress.
